Without any friendly games ahead of the African Cup Of Nations, Ghana will be expected to get off to a winning start when they play Uganda at the Stade de Port-Gentil in the first game of their group stage.
Ghana have been waiting 34 years to add to their four Africa Cup of Nations crowns but can one of the tournament’s most talented squads finally fulfil their potential? Beaten finalists in 2010 and 2015 the Black Stars have reached the semis in each of the last five tournaments but success has eluded a squad that contains star names including Andre and Jordan Ayew, Asamoah Gyan and Christian Atsu.
The Cranes may be short on star names but they will hope that Ghana’s relatively toothless attack – only twice in 2016 did they manage to score more than a goal – will allow them to nab what would be a shock win in Port-Gentil.
Uganda Cranes to miss the pair of Khalid Aucho and Murshid Jjuuko who are serving a one match ban over accumulated yellow cards in the qualifiers. Everybody in the team is fit and raring to go with goalie Denis Onyango also training well with the team to shake off a scare. Ghana has no suspensions and injuries ahead of the match thus Coach Avram Grant has a full 23 man squad at disposal to pick his team.
Denis Onyango is fit following an injury in the 3-0 loss to Cote d’Ivoire in a friendly. The absence of Jjuuko and Aucho makes the starting eleven hard to predict. Hassan Wasswa Mawanda is expected to fill the void at the heart of defence. Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito will be anchoring the backline.
