Tournament favourites Algeria will have to win their final group game against Senegal to have any hope of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals. The game will take place at the Stade de Franceville on Monday.
Having drawn with Zimbabwe and lost to Tunisia, even victory in their final group game may not be quite enough for Riyad Mahrez and company, who will have to hope Group B’s other game sees Zimbabwe win but not by more than they do.
Perhaps the Desert Warriors’ best hope of victory is that Senegal, already qualified as only they and Ghana can claim two wins from two, choose to rest key men including Sadio Mane and Mame Biram Diouf.
Senegal have lived up to their billing as one of the pre-tournament favourites by beating Tunisia and Zimbabwe 2-0 to secure a place in the knockout stage with a game to spare. That means they have the luxury of being able to rest their top starts for the final outing because top spot in the group will still be theirs even if they are beaten by Algeria.
While Senegal know they are through to the knockout stage, Algeria are fighting to stay in the competition after following up a draw against Zimbabwe with a defeat to Tunisia. The Algerians were one of the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations before it got underway, but they have produced a couple of underwhelming performances to put themselves in danger of an early exit and I just cannot see them sparing their blushes here.
